Christian organization El Roi Haiti said they are working with authorities in the U.S. and Haiti to secure the freedom of Alix Dorsainvil and her daughter. The American nurse and her child were kidnapped July 27 as Alix worked at El Roi’s ministry site near Port-au-Prince, the ministry said in a statement on its website.
“Many people are laboring for their return, but currently we cannot share more specific details. We are so thankful for all of the support that has been shown,” El Roi said. “Please continue to pray with us for the protection and freedom of Alix and her daughter. As our hearts break for this situation, we also continue to pray for the country and people of Haiti and for freedom from the suffering they endure daily.”
Protests
On Monday (July 31), Haitians protested Dorsainvil’s kidnapping and the violence in their country outside the clinic where she was working when she was taken, the Associated Press reported.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a do-not-travel advisory for Haiti due to a rise in violent crime and civil unrest in the country. “Kidnapping is widespread, and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” according to the advisory.
‘Take heart and wait for the Lord’
In their July 31 update, El Roi shared more information about Dorsainvil’s service in Haiti, which began with a college trip in 2010. Originally from New Hampshire, she worked as a nurse in the U.S. and saved money to take trips to Haiti before eventually moving there. She joined El Roi staff as a school nurse in 2020 and married Sandro Dorsainvil, its ministry director, in 2021.
“Alix lives a life following in the footsteps of Jesus as she obeys the biblical command found in Mark 12:30 to ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength … and to love your neighbor as yourself,’” El Roi said in the statement.
“We have committed this situation to God knowing that He is good, so until Alix and her daughter are safely returned to us, we will do as it says in Psalm 27:14. ‘Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.’”
