WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The suspect at the center of the most recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump has strong ties and a lengthy criminal history in North Carolina, according to multiple media reports.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, who was arrested Sunday, Sept. 15, after fleeing the scene of a Florida golf club where Trump was playing, had lived and worked in Greensboro, N.C., for most of his life until moving to Hawaii, according to published reports. WXII-TV out of Winston-Salem, N.C., reported that between 1996 and 2014, Routh was arrested 74 times and had more than 100 charges against him, based on criminal records.
The charges included possession of a weapon of mass destruction stemming from a 2002 incident in which Routh barricaded himself inside a residence, according to a report from WFMY-TV of Greensboro. Other charges included carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen goods, resisting an officer and multiple motor vehicle violations.
WFMY-TV also reported that Routh owns multiple properties across Guilford County, many of which appear abandoned. He also owned a roofing company that has been the subject of multiple lawsuits and legal battles.
Online voter records show that Routh is currently registered to vote in North Carolina. Routh’s registration lists “unaffiliated” for party affiliation, and he voted in the Democratic primary in March. A WFMY-TV reporter went to an address listed for Routh on the voter registration, but a neighbor said Routh had moved out in May.
Multiple media outlets have reported that Routh moved to Hawaii in 2018 to start a company with his son building sheds, and WXII-TV reported that Routh came back in May to clean out his house, according to a neighbor.
Routh also attended N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro but didn’t earn a degree, according to reports. The university confirmed those details to WXII-TV, saying he attended the school for two semesters in 1995.
Following his arrest after Sunday’s incident, Routh made his first court appearance on Monday. He was charged in federal court with possessing a firearm despite having a prior felony conviction and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to reports. Additional charges are possible.
Investigators say Routh hid in the shrubs outside Trump International Golf Club with a rifle while the former president was playing golf. Secret Service agents reportedly saw the muzzle of the rifle sticking out of the shrubbery, and an agent opened fire. The suspect dropped the rifle and fled the scene in an SUV. No injuries were reported in Sunday’s incident.
Routh was later arrested during a traffic stop by members of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in a neighboring county.
Sunday’s incident was the second assassination attempt against the former president in the past two months.
On July 13, Trump was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The would-be assailant in the July incident was shot and killed by Secret Secret agents. A spectator at the rally was also shot and killed in the exchange, and two other attendees were wounded.
